How AI Search Actually Works for Local Businesses

AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity don't use Google's index. Here's how they decide which local businesses to recommend — and why yours might be invisible.

AI searchlocal SEOhow it works

When someone asks Google for “best dentist in Denver,” Google looks at its index: web pages, links, keywords, local pack data. The ranking factors are well-documented after 25 years.

AI search engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity work fundamentally differently. Understanding how they decide which businesses to recommend is the first step to showing up in their answers.

AI engines don’t have an index like Google

Large language models are trained on massive datasets that include web pages, books, articles, and databases. This training creates a compressed understanding of the world — not a searchable index of URLs.

When ChatGPT recommends a plumber in Austin, it’s not looking up a list of plumbers and sorting by rating. It’s generating a response based on patterns in its training data: which businesses appeared frequently in positive contexts, which had strong review signals, which were mentioned across multiple authoritative sources.

The four signals AI engines use

1. Mention frequency

How often does your business appear in the AI engine’s training data? Businesses mentioned on multiple platforms (Yelp, Google, industry sites, local news) have stronger signals than those with a website and nothing else.

2. Sentiment and context

It’s not just whether you’re mentioned — it’s how. AI engines pick up on review sentiment, testimonials, and the context in which your business appears. A business described as “the best emergency plumber in the area” across five review sites gets a stronger signal than one with generic “good service” mentions.

3. Structured data

Some AI engines (especially those with web access like Perplexity) crawl your website in real time. JSON-LD structured data (LocalBusiness, Organization schema) helps them extract facts accurately: your name, location, hours, services, contact info. Without it, the AI guesses — and often guesses wrong.

4. Recency

AI models are periodically retrained with newer data. Perplexity searches the web live. If your most recent review is from 2023 and your competitor got five reviews last month, the competitor wins the recency signal.

Why some businesses dominate AI recommendations

The pattern is clear: businesses that rank well in AI search have a broad, consistent, and positive online presence. They’re not doing one thing well — they’re doing everything adequately:

  • Active on 5+ review and directory platforms
  • Recent reviews (within 30 days)
  • Website with structured data and clear service descriptions
  • Mentioned in local news or industry content
  • Consistent business information everywhere

What this means for your strategy

Traditional SEO optimized for one channel: Google’s index. AI visibility requires a broader approach — what the industry is calling Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Instead of optimizing for one ranking algorithm, you’re building the kind of online presence that any AI system would recognize as authoritative.

The practical implication: stop thinking about “ranking” and start thinking about “being known.” If a smart person researched your industry in your city, would they encounter your business multiple times in credible contexts? If yes, AI engines will recommend you. If no, they won’t.

Monitor, don’t assume

The biggest mistake businesses make is assuming they know their AI visibility without checking. AI recommendations change with every model update, every training data refresh, every new competitor review. What’s true today might not be true next month.

Regular monitoring — checking which AI engines recommend you and which don’t — is the only way to stay ahead. It takes 30 seconds and saves you from discovering a visibility drop after you’ve already lost the customers.
